1997 was a very tumultuous year for us here at the Knitting Factory.
My very first day here was also the opening day of our jazz festival, and
me...ever the sentimentalist....stood at the back of the converted hall and
shed a few tears as I watched Art Ensemble of Chicago play one of the most
amazing pieces I've ever heard.
Of course, the spell was broken the next morning when Cat, the dog, vomited
underneath my desk. And I guess that's a perfect metaphor for life here at
the Knitting Factory Records office (or "The Love Loft" as we now call it).

Some days are vomit on the shoes and some days are Art Ensemble of Chicago
playing in your living-room.
Things definitely took a turn for the better when we moved out of our
dungeon-esque old offices, where daily activity consisted of watching rats
decompose in the alley outside the office window and coming in early
enough to steal the one working chair before everyone else came in.
Now here we are in our beautiful loft and I can indulge in my southern
belle fantasies and...
